How to Use
WhisperTyping offers multiple ways to activate voice recording:
Toggle Key (Default)
By default, WhisperTyping uses a toggle key to start and stop recording:
- Press CapsLock once to start recording
- Press CapsLock again to stop and transcribe your speech
The toggle key can be customized to any key or key combination in Settings → Activation. Popular alternatives include:
- F1 through F12 - Function keys are easy to reach
- Scroll Lock or Pause - Rarely used keys that won't interfere with other apps
- Ctrl + Space - A common push-to-talk combination
- Any custom key combination that works for your workflow
Double-Tap for New Line
Double-pressing the toggle key quickly adds a new line (Enter). This is useful when:
- Dictating lists or bullet points
- Writing emails with multiple paragraphs
- Creating line breaks without using your keyboard
This feature can be disabled in Settings → Advanced if you prefer.
Hold Mode (Optional)
You can also enable hold-to-record using modifier key combinations:
- Hold modifier keys (e.g., Ctrl + Shift) to record
- Release to stop and transcribe
Available modifier combinations include Ctrl+Shift, Ctrl+Alt, Ctrl+Shift+Alt, Win+Ctrl, and more. Configure in Settings → Activation.
Mouse Wheel Activation (Optional)
For hands-free operation, you can enable middle mouse button activation:
- Scroll the middle mouse button to toggle recording
- Enable this option in Settings → Activation
Repaste Hotkey
Press Ctrl + Alt + V to repaste the last dictated text. This is useful if the text was pasted in the wrong location.

Tips & Common Issues
Improve Accuracy with Custom Vocabulary
Add names, technical terms, and context to your vocabulary in Settings → Vocabulary. This helps the transcription engine recognize specialized words.
Delay Before Dictation
For best results, wait about half a second after pressing the hotkey before speaking. This ensures the microphone is fully activated.
Language Output Issues
If transcription appears in the wrong language, check your language setting in Settings → Vocabulary. Also ensure your keyboard layout matches your expected output language.
Using Mouse for Dictation
Enable middle mouse button activation for hands-free operation. Configure this in Settings → Activation.
Hide Main Window
WhisperTyping can run entirely from the system tray. Right-click the tray icon to access all features, or use "Start minimized" in settings.
Use Text Replacements
Set up automatic text replacements in Settings → Replacements to fix common transcription errors or expand abbreviations.
